Better known as “coloradorailphotographer” on social media, Erik Lindgren is an artist and rail fan who approaches rail photography like a fine art. The Iowa native and Colorado resident took a moment to share his story and his favorite photographs.
Erik Lindgren is a Colorado-based photographer whose work features both the beauty of trains and the environments through which they travel.
Erick Lindgren, Actor: Lucky You. Erick Lindgren was born on August 11, 1976 in Burney, California, USA. He is an actor, known for Lucky You (2007), National Heads-Up Poker Championship (2006) and Poker Superstars III (2006). Erick Lindgren’s net worth now, however, is the negative. He told Bluff that his debts are in the $3 million range. But he also said that at one point he was $10 million in debt. Quite a fall from someone who, during the poker boom, was one of the top five most famous poker players alive.
Erik Lindgren holds an advanced degree in fine art and illustration. He’s also a full-time parent who occasionally shoots weddings and portraits. But most people know him for his rail photography. He’s known as “coloradorailphotographer” on Facebook, Instagram and railpictures.net, where he posts photos of trains that are so striking, they are works of art in their own right. His professional training as a painter and illustrator has its impact on every frame.

It Started in Le Mars
Lindgren captures a Rio Grande heritage unit traveling along the Arkansas River in Royal Gorge, Colorado
Like a lot of kids in the mid-1970s, Lindgren’s first train set was a Lionel, which launched his interest in model trains — a hobby that has continued ever since he was a kid living in Le Mars, Iowa. The following decade, Lindgren developed an interest in train photography. “For me, it was looking at Trains Magazine, vintage railroad literature and the many William Kratville books about Union Pacific I read as a child that got me thinking about documenting trains in their environment,” Lindgren said.
Now, Lindgren lives in Colorado in close proximity to the Moffat Subdivision, which he frequents on his shoots. He often photographs trains in Wyoming as well, and has worked his way through most of the Midwest. “I prefer mountain railroading and the ex-Rio Grande Moffat Road is by far my favorite along with the Overland Route west of Cheyenne, Wyoming,” Lindgren said.
Lindgren considers himself an artist first, a lover of history second, and a model builder third — three perfect ingredients for a spectacular rail photographer. He’s also interested in children’s book illustration and wildlife art. The confluence of these interests keep him shooting trains, even in difficult conditions. “I like railroad history and exploring nature; together, they drive me to get out the door before sunrise after a major winter storm in the mountains,” he explained.
Artfully Filling the Frame
Lindgren’s goal is to create a beautiful image, not just a train picture, so he works in as much of the environment as possible.
When Lindgren first started taking photographs he used slide film. But when digital cameras came along, his interest grew. “I shoot to post process and exclusively work the camera RAW format. I use layering techniques and take notes in the field about color and weather conditions and work each image as a single piece of artwork,” he said. “For me, it’s creating a beautiful image, not just a train picture, so I try to work in as much of the environment as possible.” Oftentimes capturing the perfect shot requires walking the area and planning to find the right location. To assist, Lindgren uses Google Earth and old photos taken by other photographers. It’s this strategy that helps Lindgren stand out among the crowded field of rail photographers.

“MGJNY and UP 5908 works its manifest past Blue Mountain and through the Coal Creek tangents on a delightful bright morning. Fresh heavy snow fell over the previous two days and with such little traffic on the Moffat Sub this was truly a rare privilege to catch in this light.”

“Is it 1953? Perhaps a profound blessing of timing and a well-engineered team? A 4000 class 4-8-8-4 in the deep of winter, in Wyoming? I must be dreaming! The below-zero wind chill freezes all of the steam in place just the same as this image freezes a moment in time. The King of Steam under a full head steam climbs the grade in a very Wyoming winter’s day. The Wasatch is almost home from his tour and I am sure the crews just the same as the fireman leaning out the window with the pride of the fleet, welcome home Big Boy.”

The Impact of Pandemic Hobbies on Shipping
The COVID-19 pandemic has changed so many things: the way we work, the way we learn, the way we gather for holidays. But it has also changed the moments in between work, school and celebration: it has affected our downtime, too. With social distancing in place, there is less recreating outside of the home at places like bars, restaurants and movie theaters, causing people to take up more hobbies at home. And while peoples’ creativity and ingenuity are helping to keep them entertained while homebound, a spike in rail shipments reveals another surprising element is doing its part to help: non-metallic minerals. Here’s how they play a part in the products you rely on for at-home entertainment.

What Is a Refrigerated Boxcar — and How Do They Keep Shipments Cold?
Railroads transport approximately 1.6 million carloads of food products in a typical year. While they ship a lot of nonperishable items, like canned and boxed foods, did you know railroads ship plenty of fresh and frozen foods, too?
Trains transport a wide variety of perishable items like potatoes (including frozen french fries), meat, poultry, fish, dairy products, onions, apples and fruit juice – to name a few. According to the Association of American Railroads (AAR), in any given year, railroads ship approximately 65,000 carloads of fresh fruits and vegetables and 74,000 carloads of meat and poultry products.
So, how do trains keep all of those food and beverage shipments cool? With the help of refrigerated rail cars (also known as “reefers”). Railroads, like Union Pacific, have been working to improve their fresh and frozen shipping services, adopting state-of-the-art technologies that enable food and beverage companies to transport perishable goods across long distances – even from coast to coast.

The Impact of Black Inventors on the Railroad
Since the signing of the Pacific Railway Act in 1862, which launched the building of America’s transcontinental railroad, the railroad has been built and improved on by a diverse workforce. Without the contributions of Americans from all walks of life, the railroad would never be where it is today.
“Diversity has been woven into the fabric of our company from the beginning,” said Debra Schrampfer, Chief Diversity Officer and AVP Workforce Resources for Union Pacific Railroad. “Almost 160 years ago, our transcontinental railroad was built with the ingenuity and hard work of diverse laborers. In the West, it was the Chinese track gangs. In the Midwest, it was the civil war veterans, including African Americans, as well as Irish immigrants. And the Pawnee Tribe provided protection. Collectively, their toil and tenacity connected our nation, and the route they built still moves the goods American families depend on today. Our current diverse workforce provides the platform for innovation and new perspectives that will successfully propel us into the future.”
Following the driving of the golden spike, which signified the completion of the transcontinental railroad, many inventions have helped to continually improve railroad operations, not the least of which are those of Black inventors. “All through railroad history, we can point to Black inventors and leaders who pushed the industry forward,” Schrampfer said. “Our past is an inspiration to do great things as we learn about the heroes that came before us. It is also a harsh reminder that we must do better until equity is achieved at all levels.”
In honor of Black History Month, we’re shining a light on four Black inventors who have made an important impact on the railroad industry.

Quiz: Is Intermodal Right for Your Freight Shipments?
Intermodal shipping refers to moving freight by two or more modes of transportation, allowing freight to travel in containers that move seamlessly between trucks, trains and cargo ships. Intermodal offers numerous benefits, so if you’re currently shipping products across land by truck alone, you may be missing out.
Because intermodal uses rail for the long haul, it allows shippers to leverage a more affordable shipping solution, while maintaining the flexibility of trucks for pick-up and delivery. On average, railroads can move one ton of freight more than 470 miles per gallon of fuel, so using rail for the long-haul portion of the trip lets shippers leverage a more environmentally friendly way to ship, too.
Intermodal is safe, reliable, green and cost effective, and you can ship just about anything in an intermodal container. But is it a good fit for your freight shipments? Take the quiz below to find out.
