2017 Preakness Horses
- Swiss Skydiver gave fans A Jewel To Remember at Preakness 145 when she outpaced the favorite, Authentic, in a photo finish to be only the sixth filly in Preakness history to capture the Woodlawn Vase, and first filly since 2009. Jockey Robby Albarado, trainer Ken McPeek, and owner Peter Callahan made history in the first Preakness Stakes race.
- The outcome of the 2017 Preakness wasn’t quite as surprising as the 2017 Kentucky Derby, but there was an upset nonetheless. Just as Classic Empire looked to have the second leg of the Triple Crown.

Preakness Stakes 2017 is Saturday, May 20. The race is the middle jewel of the Triple Crown,falling in between the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes, and is run at 13/16 miles for three-year-olds. Five will be returning from the Kentucky Derby,but there also looks to be at least five new shooters. Here is a look at thecontenders who are currently shaping the field:

Your Kentucky Derby winner and Preaknessfavorite. The son of Bodemeister has been unbeaten in four starts as athree-year-old, taking two Grade 1 races, the Florida Derby and the KentuckyDerby, in impressive fashion back to back.

The Juvenile champ rebounded from his thirdin the Grade 2 Holy Bull when he got up to take the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby byhalf a length over front runner Conquest Mo Money. Despite being bumped aroundat the Kentucky Derby break and getting a swollen eye, probably from the sloppykickback, Classic Empire ran a bang-up race to get fourth late.

Without a win his during his three-year-oldseason, this longshot snuck up the rail in the Kentucky Derby to be runner-upto Always Dreaming. Lookin At Lee will most likely be making another late run,but his odds will probably be lower than they were Derby day.

The Grade 2 Fountain of Youth winner did nobetter than seventh in the Kentucky Derby. This is another horse that should bemaking a late run. One important change going into the Preakness will be thejockey. Javier Castellano, who has ridden Gunnevera in all four starts thisyear, will be aboard Cloud Computing. Mike Smith is picking up the mount.

These connections don’t have big-timeexperience, but Conquest Mo Money has been impressive enough to be given aPreakness chance. After three wins at Sunland Park and a second to Hence in theGrade 3 Sunland Derby, Conquest Mo Money almost held on to steal the Grade 1Arkansas Derby from Classic Empire his first time racing outside of Sunland.

The Sunland Derby winner was talked of prettyhighly as a sneaky horse in the Kentucky Derby. After a rainy weekend and an11th place finish, Asmussen said the kickback prevented Hence from running hisrace. His connections have been happy with his post-Derby training and aremarching on to Pimlico.

After breaking his maiden third time out,Multiplier next ran in the Grade 3 Illinois Derby with a come-from-behindvictory by a head. The colt has little race experience, but proved successfulenough in his stakes debut for his current owners to purchase him from AmericanEquistock. The Grade 1 classic race will be a much tougher test than theIllinois Derby.

This three-time starter is a bit of aquestion mark. After winning his debut, he went on to be second in the Grade 3Gotham and third in the Grade 2 Wood Memorial. Despite the inexperience, JavierCastellano hopped off Gunnevera to ride Cloud Computing in the Preakness.

After nabbing his first stakes victory by ahead in the Grade 3 Lexington, Senior Investment is on his way to thePreakness, which will be an even bigger test. This is another horse that likesto make a late run.

Winless in four starts at three, Term of Art’stwo wins have been at a mile. His last victory was in the Grade 3 Cecille B.DeVille as a two-year-old and he was seventh last out in the Grade 1 SantaAnita Derby.

This European contender has not beenconfirmed yet, but the Preakness would only mark his second dirt start. His onedirt attempt resulted in a fourth place finish in the Group 2 UAE Derby, but hedid accomplish being runner-up in the 2016 Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf.
